Summer: December to March

This is peak season. Days are hot and humid, often 30 to 40 C, with afternoon showers and the fullest beaches of the year. It is also festival time: the giant New Year (Reveillon) party on Copacabana and Carnival in February or early March. Expect the highest prices and book well ahead.

Autumn: April and May

One of the sweet spots. The heat eases, the summer crowds thin out, and prices drop from their peak. Beach days are still very possible and the sightseeing weather is reliable. A great time for a first visit.

Winter: June to August

Rio winter is mild and dry, usually 20 to 26 C with clear skies. It is the best window for Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, since cloud free days mean the views actually show up. The sea is cooler and the beach quieter, but the city feels relaxed and prices are low.

Spring: September to November

Temperatures climb again and the city wakes up before the summer rush. September and October are excellent shoulder months, warm but not yet crowded. By late November you start to feel the summer energy returning.
