What makes Christ the Redeemer special

Finished in 1931, the Art Deco statue of Cristo Redentor crowns Corcovado mountain, arms spread 28 meters wide over the city. From the platform you look down on Sugarloaf, Guanabara Bay, the Maracana and the long curve of Copacabana. On a clear morning it is the best panorama in Rio de Janeiro.

Tickets and prices (2026)

  • Standard ticket: from around R$100 (about $20), includes official transport up Corcovado
  • High season and weekends: prices and demand rise, book ahead
  • Online booking: recommended, timed slots sell out in summer
  • Skip the line tours: from $55, add hotel transport and a guide

How to get to the top

Private cars are not allowed up the mountain. Your options:

Cog train: the scenic choice. The trem do Corcovado leaves Cosme Velho station and climbs about 20 minutes through Tijuca rainforest to just below the statue.

Official vans: authorized vans run from Paineiras, Largo do Machado and Copacabana. Slightly cheaper, with a short stop at the Paineiras visitor center.

Guided tour: most Christ the Redeemer tours include the train or van plus hotel pickup, removing the logistics entirely.

Tips for visiting

  • Go right at opening (8 AM) or late afternoon for fewer people
  • Check the forecast, the summit clouds over on grey days
  • Weekdays are far quieter than weekends and holidays
  • Bring water and sun protection, the platform has little shade
  • Wide angle photos work best, the statue is enormous up close
