Getting to Petropolis

You have two main options: a guided day trip (easiest) or the coach (cheapest). A guided day trip includes hotel pickup, transport up the mountain road, and a guide who handles tickets. Coaches leave the Novo Rio bus station every 30 to 60 minutes, cost around R$35 each way, and take about 90 minutes.

Driving yourself is possible but the climb has fog and heavy weekend traffic, so most visitors prefer to leave the wheel to someone else.

The Imperial Museum

The Museu Imperial is the highlight, the former summer palace of Dom Pedro II, Brazil's last emperor. You glide through the rooms in felt slippers to protect the floors, and the crown jewels and royal carriages are genuinely impressive. Allow 90 minutes.

The Crystal Palace and more

A short walk away, the Palacio de Cristal is a delicate iron and glass pavilion shipped from France in 1884. Nearby sit the gothic Cathedral of Sao Pedro de Alcantara, where the imperial family is buried, and the house of aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont. All are within an easy walk in the historic center.
