The two icons at a glance

Christ the Redeemer stands 700 meters up on Corcovado mountain inside Tijuca National Park. You reach it by cog train or official van, then steps or a lift to the statue. Sugarloaf is a 396-meter granite peak over the bay in Urca, reached by two cable cars. They sit on opposite sides of the city.

Views compared

Christ gives you the classic god's-eye view: the whole sweep of beaches, the lagoon, and the mountains, with the statue itself as the centerpiece. Sugarloaf is more about the bay, the city skyline, and the surprise of seeing Christ on his distant peak. For pure photography, most people prefer Sugarloaf, especially at golden hour.

Cost and access

  • Christ the Redeemer: official train + entry around R$100 to R$120; van options vary by route
  • Sugarloaf: cable car round trip ~R$160 (about $32)
  • Both involve some walking and steps at the top
  • A combined tour bundles transport, fees and a guide for one price

Crowds and timing

Christ is busiest from late morning to early afternoon, and afternoon clouds often shroud the statue. Go at opening. Sugarloaf is best saved for the late afternoon: ride up before sunset and come back down after the city lights switch on. See our full Sugarloaf cable car guide for the exact timing.

The ideal one-day order

  • 8:00 AM: Christ the Redeemer, clear skies and thin crowds
  • 11:30 AM: Selaron Steps and the historic center
  • 1:00 PM: lunch in Urca or Botafogo
  • 4:00 PM: Sugarloaf cable car up for sunset
  • 6:30 PM: city lights from the summit, then descend

A full-day combo tour follows roughly this flow and removes the cross-town logistics.
