The beach neighborhoods
Copacabana is the classic base, with the famous beach, plenty of hotels and the best value of the beach areas. Ipanema is more stylish and walkable, with Posto 9 and the Arpoador sunset rock. Leblon, next door, is upscale and quieter with excellent dining. All three put you on the sand and close to the icons.
Near Sugarloaf: Botafogo and Urca
Botafogo is a real working neighborhood with a great bar scene and easy access to Sugarloaf. Urca, at the foot of the cable car, is one of the calmest corners of the city, with the little Praia Vermelha beach and a sociable seawall at sunset.
Character and culture: Santa Teresa and Lapa
Santa Teresa is the bohemian hilltop quarter, with cobbled lanes, artists' studios, colonial mansions and the historic yellow tram. Just below, Lapa comes alive at night with samba clubs under the Arcos da Lapa arches and the colorful Selaron Steps nearby.
Downtown and beyond
Centro is the historic and business core, busy by day with museums and grand theaters, quieter at night. Far to the west, Barra da Tijuca offers long modern beaches and shopping, but it is a long way from the classic sights.
